This was my 4th road marathon, and the 1st attempt at a ‘fast’ (relative to me) effort. I’m primarily a trail runner, so the idea of pounding the pavement looking at paces isn’t super exciting but after finishing a grueling 135km trail race in September I thought the change might be nice. It took a few weeks but I convinced my training partner, Katie Mills, to join me. She had just finished an epic 400km across the spine of Wales where she absolutely demolished the women’s field with a new course record.
I’ve run 3 marathons before this. One of those was my first, very uneducated attempt on little training. The other 2 were last minute decisions for reasons I can’t remember. One I gave myself 11 days to prepare, the other one, less than 24 hours. My off the couch PB was 3:47, so it was exciting to see what a little consistent speed work could do! Sunday May 1st we headed to the start line with fancy new road kicks and all the in race nutrition we could need from the Tsawwassen Run Inn.
We got to the start line to find there was a major delay. They didn’t tell the racers why but it turns out there was a bomb threat. Luckily everything was handled and we took off when safe to do so.
The first half was great, but I fought the urge to DNF at 30km when my stomach cramped and I found it hard to breath. My legs felt great and my only goal was to not give up so I just kept shuffling. The Kms ticked off and finally we reached the end and the buzz of the crowd and my little 2 year old at the finish line made it all worth it!
I didn’t have my best day but was happy with a 3:15:59 finish, and Katie ran an amazing 3:07. I was 40th out of 2102 women, so not a bad result but definitely need to try again!
Huge congrats to all the runners!

The RunInn Delta’s 10th annual Boundary Bay Cross-Country Meet brought 950 kids from 15 schools to Centennial Beach Park last Thursday.
"The weather worked out in our favour" said race Director Kevin Ridley. "We had 12 races throughout the day for boys and girls from Grades 2 to 7. We started the meet nine years ago to give local kids a chance to just get out and have a fun cross country race experience followed by a barbecue hosted by the T.O.O.B.S of Delta.”
The meet was sponsored by New Balance, Muscle Memory, Sungod Physio, DNA Data, Servicemaster, TOOBS, Save On Foods and the Runinn Delta.
The meet was organized in conjunction with the parents of Sacred Heart and other local volunteers who generously give their time and energy to put on a great local event.

I believe that nutrition is completely individual and will work with you to find a nutrition plan that feels just right. I also believe that balance is key and encourage “real life” programs that allow you to enjoy all of the good things life has to offer."

People start running for all kinds of different reasons. Some get into it to lose weight, some want to improve their cardiovascular fitness to improve another sport, and others simply enjoy the rhythm and movement.
Kevin Ridley, owner of the Run Inn in Tsawwassen and Vancouver, has been running for 40 years and helping people train for almost as long. When he opened his Kerrisdale location about 25 years ago he began running clinics to help educate the public on proper technique and training.
“We found that’s the way you engage with the community and/or customers,” says Kevin. “So we started a clinic where you can learn everything from walking right up to competitive runners.”
There are thousands of sports out there but the one constant seems to be running. That’s because Kevin says there are so many sports where running is a perfect cross-training activity, whether it be running, pilates, yoga or lifting weights in the gym, they all contribute to health and well-being.
Even though the Run Inn is primarily a running and walking specialty store, Kevin finds that increasingly their customers are asking about crossover sports. And for good reason.
“People find that they can maintain their fitness into their sixties and seventies working out pretty competitively still,” he says.
That’s where a good training clinic can make a world of difference. People of all ages, abilities and walks of life are welcome to sign up for the Run Inn Club.
These clinics give beginners the right information when they start out so that they pick the proper running or walking shoe, but perhaps more importantly, pick the right pace to prevent injury.
“Probably eighty percent of people who get injured when they’re starting a new program is because they’re trying to do too much, too fast.”
The other, and arguably more popular, reason to join the Run Inn Club is for the social aspect of being part of a team. Most runners in the clinics will set goals to participate in races, so the team will help that runner prepare for a 5 km or 10 km or half marathon over a period of 12 to 14 weeks.
But all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.
“Then we’ll do a club night where we’ll do a social and we’ll have some wine and beer and appetizers that bring people together and get to know people in the group they may not be training with,” says Kevin. “When you do a lot of training you want to have some reward at the end of it.”
