The Run Inn the Woods started nineteen years ago as a memorial run for our good friend Barry Allcock who passed away in 1997 after a long battle with cancer. Barry loved to run, but more importantly, he loved to run while in the company of good friends. It is in this spirit that we remember and celebrate with Run Inn the Woods.
Since the inaugural hosting of Run Inn the Woods, The Run Inn has lost a few other friends who shared the same spirit as Barry.
We remember a young Carrie Beaman, who passed away in 2002, at 24 years of age, from neuroendocrine cancer. Carrie did a lot in her short life, and promoted happiness and wellness to everyone.
We remember Michael Holyk, who lost his battle to an aggressive form of lymphoma in December 2012. He was a passionate runner who wore his many souvenir race shirts with pride. For Mike, his next run was always the best run.
Most recently, we remember Scott Jackson, who passed away on January 4, 2015 after being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia eight months earlier. He was 39 years old. Scott grew up in Kerrisdale and was a loyal supporter of The Run Inn since it opened. Scott was one of the store's "regulars", who would pop in for a visit on his way home from work, do the afternoon coffee run, and just generally hang out.
In 2010, Scott got motivated to get more active. He completed a couple of Sun Runs and decided he would challenge himself to train for a half marathon. Along with his wife, Veronica, and his parents, Neil and Nancy, Scott participated in two Run Inn half marathon clinics with the goal of completing the half marathon distance. He did just that, and side by side, Scott and Veronica completed the 2011 Victoria Half Marathon. Six months later, they crossed the BMO Half Marathon finish line, taking 20 minutes off of their Victoria time. There to celebrate both finishes were proud parents Neil and Nancy.
And most recently, Devi Ralla. What a great person Devi was. We were so sad to hear of Devi’s passing in January of this year from an aggressive form of breast cancer. Devi ran with The Run Inn for years. She co-lead the marathon training group and could be counted on for her support, encouragement and sense of humor and fun on the training runs.
Since 1998 Run Inn the Woods has raised over $141,000. It is the longest running, largest grossing, independently managed, community based fundraising event for the BC Cancer Foundation.
We invite you to share Barry's, Carrie's, Michael's, Scott's and Devi's spirit of running and, in doing so, support the BC Cancer Foundation. Invite family and friends to join you for a casual run or walk through the trails of Pacific Spirit Park, and then head back to The Run Inn for a post run coffee and visit.
